ABUJA2017 ENGINEERING CONFERENCE20 – 24 NOVEMBER, 2017, ABUJA
Welcome to Abuja 2017It particularly gladdens my heart that the Council at the first meeting in January approved the theme for the 2017 National Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting. The theme being “Diversification of the Nigerian Economy – Engineering Perspective” is apt. The Council also slated November 20 – 24, 2017 to hold this crucial event in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.
In 1968 we deliberated on the “The Role of the Professional Engineer in a Developing Nation”. Since then, our efforts by the initiation of vital discourses, essentially, to prompt government actions towards the actualization of sustainable development has been on the front burner.
Our 2017 Conference being the fiftieth (50th) in the series, offers us another opportunity to bring together stakeholders to brainstorm and evolve strategies on how, as a country, we can arise and deploy all our technological know-how and use every available resources to create a multi-level, diversified economy and prove to the world that we are able to create enormous wealth for ourselves and even support many other neighbouring countries.
Nigeria is top on the list of African countries endowed with both natural and human resources capable of facilitating the creation of a great country, however, for decades there have been over dependence on oil and gas resources which accounts for government revenue substantially.
As a matter of fact, diversification is the only way out of our economic quagmire. It was in our bid to promote such ideals that we were unanimous on the theme “Strategies for Promotion of Sustainable Technology-Based and Production-Driven Economy in Nigeria” for our 2012 Conference which held in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Our governments have for many years adopted a variety of policies for the purpose of promoting growth in order to boost the living conditions of citizens. In-spite of such concerted efforts, our people have continued to wallow in poverty.
This, undeniably, calls for the overhaul of such strategies to strengthen our economy, guarantee employment and decent standard of living. We must brace up to the challenge and be able to support the creation of jobs and businesses.
I consider this opportunity of once again assembling our think-tank as well as our international colleagues, a good platform for the exhaustion of all issues hindering our development as a country.
Ladies and gentlemen, let me in the meantime, thank you very sincerely in advance for your attendance of this great gathering.
God bless you all.
